Prayerful Concerns of Our Parish Community – Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God

Jan 1, 2024 | Prayers of the Faithful

We offer these Prayers of the Faithful for the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God and New Year’s Day 2024, celebrated at Masses  Sunday evening and Monday morning.

Another year draws to a close. Again, we come to this place of sanctuary to make sense of our past and our future. How good it is to know that your promises are everlasting. In hope we pray:

Forgive us our past, God, renew our present, and affirm our future, touched by your grace. We pray to the Lord.

In this New Year, grant us grace that we may open ourselves to the possibilities of compassion, of kindness, of humility, of gentleness, of patience, opening ourselves to the possibility of your bringing life in all its fullness, we pray to the Lord.

We pray for peace in your world, this year. Set your Spirit free in your world that humanity may choose light and hope over darkness and fear, compassion and generosity over suspicion and isolation, care for the world over ever-more pollution and destruction, we pray to the Lord.

Help us to experience anew your invitation to us this year: to a love and a relationship that is not an obedient transaction, not a forced commitment, not a judgmental demand, but a willingness to be loved, and to experience the whole of life within the love of God. We pray to the Lord.

As Mary was given a choice to accept your grace or not, to risk in becoming the Mother of Jesus-who-is-God, help us in all the decisions we will face this year, to choose wisely, to choose love and faith. We pray to the Lord.

Through Mary’s child we are shown the promise of eternal life. May our loved ones know fully that blessing now. At this liturgy we remember:

We pray to the Lord.

Father in heaven, after the rush and pause of Advent and the whirl of Christmas, help us now as we reflect on Mary’s trust in you and look ahead to the New Year, help us to trust you, leaning not on our own understanding, relying not on our own strength and will, but on your grace, your peace, your love. Amen.
