OLH Parish Synod Session on June 23

May 27, 2024 | Events, Pope Francis, Spiritual Life, Synod

Please do plan to join this time of “conversations in the Spirit” as we listen for the guidance of the Holy Spirit for our parish in the coming 3-5 years.

We will begin the session with a lunch. In order to help us plan for the lunch and the session itself, we ask that you register in advance (forms are in the bulletin) if you plan to attend our OLH Parish Synodal Session on Sunday, June 23rd from 12:30-3:30 PM in the Parish Hall.

Pope Francis has stated that the voices of parishioners and parish priests are essential for the church to “learn how to walk together and set out on the path of synodality.” From April 29 – May 2 nearly 200 parish priests from over 100 countries gathered in Rome, so that the voices of parish priests are included in preparation for the Synod’s final session in Oct 2024. At that meeting the Pope recalled that the report from the Synod session in Oct 2023 stated that “parishes, beginning with their structures and the organization of parish life, are called to think of themselves as primarily being of service to the mission that the faithful carry out in society, in family life and the workplace…parish communities increasingly need to become places from which the baptized set out as missionary disciples and to which they return, full of joy, in order the share the wonders worked by the Lord through their witness.”

The Pope offered the priests three suggestions:
1. “…live out your specific ministerial [gifts and call to service] in ever greater service to the varied gifts that the Spirit sows in the People of God…It is urgent to discover with faith, the many and varied gifts of the Spirit of the laity. Pastors are not to “dominate others but rather bring out in them their great and precious possibilities…

2. Learn to practice the art of communal discernment through “conversations in the Spriit (this is the purpose of our Synod meeting in June).

3. The Pope urged priests to “base everything you do in a spirit of sharing and fraternity among yourselves and with your bishops.. The Pope concluded his letter by inviting the priests to “encourage reflection, with a synodal and missionary mindset “– and to let the Office of the Synod in Rome know what they are doing. Our June 23 meeting follows the spirit and requests of Pope Francis to the world’s parish priests.

Let’s spend a bit of time listening, discovering, and sharing.
